Just thought I'd expand on Dawn of War 3 a little.

I said it's a waste of money and the developers should be sacked. I stand by this for a large number of reasons, but I will go over the biggest one.

First of all, we need to understand one thing. Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War is 2 things.
1). It's a franchise(Warhammer 40k)
2). It's a game series(Dawn of War)

An example is Command and Conquer (Franchise), Red Alert Universe (Series) Tiberium Universe (series) Total War (Franchise) Rome(Series) Medievil (Series) Shogun (Series)

Dawn of War is a series of games, one thing the games in a series have in common is continuity in gameplay. Since the introduction of Dawn of War 2, things have gone down hill in this department. The first game was a straight RTS(real time strategy) game that had what's known as a "meat grinder" style to it and a primitive cover system.
In Dawn of War 2, this changed a lot. It was scaled down immensely and you relied heavily on cover and micro-management, with no base building. The objective was still the same though as the original of the series more or less.
Dawn of War 3 came with enormous hype of "going back to our roots" and having massive scale battles with base building and a new centralised game mode called Powercore.
Turns out Powercore is their attempt at doing a MOBA style game such as League of Legends of Dota 2. The Emperor would spin in his grave if he knew. He really would!

I understand they'd want to cash in on the enormous market of the MOBA style game, I've no problem with that, but do not drag the Dawn of War title down with your f****** mistakes! Call it something else, make it a different game because Dawn of War is not a bloody MOBA!!! Relic have single handedly

{Ed001's Note - I have to admit, I have played this game in beta and it was god awful. An absolutely brutally bad game, as was DoW2. It came as part of the Humble Bundle, but I will not be bothering with it at all or even downloading it, as it is abysmal. I like the original game, but the sequels are to be avoided.}

I completely agree Ed. Had they called it Warhammer 40k: Powercore or something, made an entirely new series out of it then we wouldn't be having this discussion.

I must apologise for the early send. I hadn't finished.

Continuing on - Relic have single handedly ruined what could have been the greatest RTS game to come out so far.

There is allegedly going to be a huge content patch in February, but that won't save it unless it follows the following steps.

1). It's free
2). It comes with Necrons, Chaos, Dark Eldar, Tao, Sisters of Battle and Imperial Guard.
3). Add a cover system
4). Remove all of the cosmetic rubbish that is not needed - we have Army painter for that!

I also fully understand what you're saying about #2 as well Ed, I would completely agree but I kind of have a soft spot for the campaign, it was really good in my opinion!

{Ed001's Note - I couldn't get into 2 at all. Played it once and it just failed to captivate my attention. I get so little time to play games that a game needs to get me at once or it very rarely, if ever, gets played. I found that with Civ IV, though I love the Civ games, it never captured my attention so I stuck with III. However V and VI I loved straight away and VI is probably the only game I really play these days.

Dawn of War, the original one, was another that I got into right away, whereas 2 felt like a letdown, so I just never bothered. 3 is even worse. I had such high hopes, the trailers and press releases made it seem like a huge step forward and I was looking forward to playing it so much. Then I did and wished I hadn't bothered. I only played the beta once and that was once too often!

I am not sure what they can do to fix it bar making it into a completely different game altogether.}

I just found the dialog between characters, even though cheesy, was still strong enough to keep me going, as you got to learn a lot about the Soulstorm aftermath, when the Space Marines were defeated by the Orcs. Cyrus never goes into great detail, but you do get segments where he draws certain comparisons with the Orcs on Kauruva(Soulstorm campaign).

It's quite amazing to think that the Orcs managed to out fight every other army in the Soulstorm campaign and control the sector.

As I've got your attention, and to hopefully give you somewhat of a break from the Coutinho aftermath and Macca's statement(I really feel for you guys. ). Is there anything that's caught your attention of late on the gaming scene?

{Ed001's Note - I do love the Warhammer novels, maybe I should give DoW2 another chance at some point.

To be honest nothing has made me even want to play them since Civ VI. Though I have been intrigued by the look of that game where it is all about just surviving for as long as possible, though the name escapes me!}

Sorry I clicked submit before I had finished then. I mean to ask if there is anything recent you could recommend to me, as the only recent games I have are COD: WW2 (which I actually like to be honest, surprisingly as I have never enjoyed the previous CODs I played) and Gran Turismo Sport and F1 2017 (neither of which I play much because it is so much messing setting the wheel up. I need to get a proper chair to use for the wheel as I don't have a proper place to fit it and the floor is slippy so the pedals end up slipping away when I try to brake!).

I tend to sneer at most modern games to be honest with you Ed, for various reasons whether it be lack of content, lack of lore/story, being online exclusive, poor optimisation and many more things.

The only one I really recommend with any conviction is probably ARK: Survival Evolved, which may be the survival game you were thinking of. It has Dinosaurs and in some cases mythical creatures which you have to avoid/kill/survive against. I've spoken in depth about it on here before, so if I may steal one of your editorial lines and direct you to the search function. Lol Just kidding, you're probably too busy for that.

It's fun, it's difficult at times and it's very frustrating at times too. If you're just playing against the environment(PvE) then there is no real end game, it's just a creative sandbox with danger for you to do whatever you want with. There are lots of mods in the steam workshop to choose from too, some of them are almost entirely new games, very easy to install too, just click subscribe and it's done! And don't be scared by the word "Subscribe" it's just a way to store it in your game files, they're all free and no details required in case you didn't know.

The end game if you're playing against other people(PvP) is to basically be the alpha tribe and rule with an iron fist.

There are other parts of the game which are relevant, such as doing what's known as "cave runs" where you enter a cave to obtain an artifact, once you've collected enough artifacts, you can go to a beacon and summon a Boss to fight. Once you defeat the boss you ascend or something, it's basically the end game but you still play on after it.

It's not 100% needed in the game, but it's a bit of action and the chance to use your weapons and armour in a meaningful manner if you're playing PvE.

The lore of ARK is subjective. You're basically dropped onto the ARK with no indication of what is going on, there are no missions, instructions or any hint as to what you're meant to do. However, if you do some exploring, you'll come across these things called "Explorer Notes" which are from previous inhabitants of the ARK, detailing their findings and so on.
They are written in different languages and by different specimens as they're called in the game. There is more to it, in the form of clues during your ascension cut scene, some boffins on youtube have been decoding these clues and it may be worth a watch if you're interested.

One thing I will say about this game, it is completely 100% customisable to what you want and need. For example if you don't have much time to play, you can still enjoy the game at it's fullest, as you can adjust pretty much everything.
For example, breeding takes a long time, to give you a clue, a Wyvern(dragon type monster) will take you approximately 5 real days to mature from egg to adult if you're using an online server with default breeding rates. However, my Wyvern was fully grown after 20 minutes, because I am very impatient and I really wanted to kill the Alpha Rex patrolling around my fortress! So I adjusted the breeding times to suit.

I hope this is makes sense, my insomnia is really playing up and I haven't slept for a while.

{Ed001's Note - I have looked at this game a lot, but I wonder do you know what it is like on the PS4? Only my PC has been playing up since the latest Windows update, constantly crashing the display driver, which closes down everything. I no longer have a second PC (though I intend to rectify that this year by custom building my own bit by bit) so am not able to really play anything at all on PC for now. It is just not worth it unless it is turn-based and can be set to autosave at the end of each turn. Otherwise the frustration of it crashing just as you achieve something is far too much to make playing anything enjoyable.}

Yeah there was an issue recently involving most operating systems and Intel. Some Intel CPU's can lose up to 30% power
Microsoft released a patch but it's rubbish and breaking all kinds of things.

{Ed001's Note - it is typical of Microsoft, give you a bunch of programs you don't want and need while breaking what you do need.}

Oh and I don't know much about any console games, even if they are on PC too! I'd imagine it would be dulled down a bit and that would be it. Maybe you'd have some controller input lag, I don't know.

{Ed001's Note - I doubt I would notice input lag, I very rarely play online.}

Ark is pretty great on console but far far better on pc which is such a shame because my laptop can’t play it without stuttering. There are quite a few survivalist games out there at the moment and while ark is one of the better ones, I’m hopelessly addicted to 7 days to die on ps4- zombies mixed with Minecraft where you survive and build a fort, gather food, learn skills and on every 7th day, the usual zombies who walk around a la George Romero during the day, go batshit crazy and pretty much ruin everything ala 28 days later. It’s ugly as anything and glitchy. The critics hated it but it has a huge fan base for such a small game and last years game of the year hands down. There’s also the forest (which is amazing on pc but will be coming to ps4 this year) Same type of thing but real pretty to look at and genuinely terrifying when playing alone. There’s also don't starve which is a cutesy rock hard survival sim where yeah, you just do your best to not die. Most of these are ridiculous fun in co op.

{Ed001's Note - cheers mate. I have seen that Don't Starve and the look of it puts me off.}

Hsf, if you liked ark do give the forest and 7 days to die a try. Another cracker is the Conan game. Sadly it’s co op on xbone is dreadful unless you rent a server. If you host a regular game, the second player is only allowed to be a few feet away from the host. If they step away, an invisible chain starts pulling the player back to the host. This of course is really handy in a fight with npc’s.

aoe, I think ARK is enough survival game for me personally. I put 900+ hours into it already, plus I've seen how broken Conan is. Lol.
